REMARKS FROM THE FLOOR

Assemblyman Perkins requested that the following remarks be entered in the Journal.
Assemblyman Perkins:
Today, as everybody is probably aware, we have many Girl Scouts with us. Particularly from my perspective, Mr. Speaker, I am very proud and honored to have two Girl Scouts with me as well as to see the group that we have in our Chambers. With today's problems and social ills, it's always very wonderful to see an organization that is able to focus and direct young people's attention towards good things, and I for one would like to congratulate the Girl Scouts and their organization for being here today.

Assemblywoman Freeman:
I would like to join our Majority Leader in his welcome to all of those in our Chamber today. I have a few brief remarks to make.
Margaret Meade told us never to doubt that a small group of dedicated individuals can change the world. She said, "Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Meade might well have been speaking of the groups here today for Grassroots Lobby Days. Thirty-seven organizations and more than 150 individuals have gathered here to share their viewpoints with us. These are the "movers and shakers" of grassroots campaigns, representing thousands of members of their organizations throughout the state.
Since 1991, Nevada Women's Lobby has coordinated this visit to the legislature to encourage citizen involvement in the legislative process.
Seated with us on the floor today are young women who will create the world of the future. The Girl Scout Councils arranged their "Day at the Legislature" to coincide with Grassroots Lobby Days. This is a visual reminder that the decisions we make today will influence the lives of these young women and the families of the future.
Let us welcome the members of all the organizations today.
Mr. Speaker, I have a list here of 26 organizations who are core sponsors today, and I'd like to enter these into the record: The Action Network; American Association of University Women; Americans for Mental Health; Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada; Church Women United; Great Basin Primary Care Association; League of Women Voters; Maternal and Child Health Care Coalition; NAACP; UNLV Chapter; Nathan Adelson Hospice; National Association of Social Workers; Nevada Chapter; Nevada Nurses Association; Nevada Women's Political Caucus; NEW Project; Nevada Federation of Business and Professional Women; Nevada School Counselors Association; Nevada Women's Lobby; Planned Parenthoods in Nevada; Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada; Religious Alliance in Nevada; Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada; Religious Alliance in Nevada; Republican Women of Incline Village; Soroptimists International; Tahoe Women's Services; Toiyabe Sierra Club; UNLV and UNR students; Washoe Family Care.

Assemblywoman Koivisto:
I also want to reiterate how important it is that we recognize the theme of this year's Grassroots Lobby Days: Today's Decisions, Tomorrow's Heritage, and that we remain mindful of this throughout the 1997 Session as we make decisions which will influence the lives of future generations. These young women sharing the floor with us today are counting on us to continue to make Nevada a state where all citizens have opportunities to succeed and where all families and individuals are valued.

Assemblywoman Giunchigliani:
As a former Girl Scout, I was quite shocked today to learn that one of the young ladies sitting with me happened to be one of my former students from when I taught at K.O. Knudson, so it was serendipitous.
